Evolution on the sentry gun in Team Fortress

This video covers the evolution of the sentry gun in Team Fortress.

Quake Team Fortress – While filming the footage for the video, I could not find a Quakeworld Team Fortress server that was running the original skin, so this one had to do. The original QWTF sentry gun had a brown looking skin and did not look anything like that black one. Out of all of the team fortress versions, the QWTF sentry gun was probably the most lethal.

Team Fortress Classic – Was easy to build and upgrade, but did not seem to be ask lethal as the QWTF version. The TFC sentry gun can be rotated right and left, but not up or down.

Fortress Forever – Is maybe the most fun version and maybe has the best design. This thing is small, can be built just about anywhere, and can be aimed exactly where the engineer wants it.  When a cloaked spy gets close to this sentry gun, it starts beeping.  That way a cloaked spy is not going to sneak up on the engineer and his gun.

Team Fortress 2 – Due to the cloaking ability of the spy and the sapper, this sentry gun is on the weak side. Its a good gun, but doe to the over balancing of the classes, its almost useless against a good spy.

Quake Team Fortress is Alive and Well

It makes my heart happy to see Quake Team Fortress (also known as Quakeworld Team Fortress) alive and well. Seeing these videos brings back memories of the good ole days.

At one time Quakeworld and Quakeworld Team Fortress was the game of the day. The difference between netquake and QW was the networking code. For people on dial up, QW ran smoother then netquake. But there were the die hards that refused to play QW.

Quakeworld and QWTF was popular for several reasons.  1, the gameplay was fast and intense.  2, it was the only first person shooter multiplayer game around.  Being the first has some advantages – such as setting a standard that everyone else has to follow.

An old Left 4 Dead exploit

Example of an exploit in Left 4 Dead that allowed more AI controlled special infected to be spawned. I’am just glad this was fixed. Or was it? <insert twilight zone music here>

On the topic of hard drives

This morning as I was browsing through some forums, the topic of storage capacity came up. One person that voted, said he had over 8 gigs of storage. The first thing that came to mind was how far we have come in computer technology in the past 15 years.

My families first computer had a 1.2 gig hard drive and came loaded with windows 95. Somewhere around 1997 or 1998 that 1.2 gig unit was upgraded and replace with a 6 gig hard drive that cost $320 dollars. After about 6 months of service it went out and the company replaced it with an 8 gig drive.

That 8 gig drive for several years. But then again, most games were less then 200 – 300 megs. Quake was only about 96 megs with the default install. With all of the modifications of Quake installed, the Quake directory swelled to an amazing 300 – 400 megs. I think the install of Quakeworld Team Fortress alone was almost 75 megs. Doom was less then 30 megs, Diablo was less then 30 megs, Command and Conquer DOS, Gold and Red Alert – all three were less then 30 megs.

Just after the year 2000 is when I bought my first 20 and 40 gig hard drive. Talk about a big step going from 8 gigs to 40 gigs.

And today, we can go down to just about any retail outlet and buy a 1 terabyte drive for about $100. A couple of months ago I saw a 1.5 terabyte drive on sale for less then $100.

When I see those prices, I think about that 6 gig drive for $320.

New Left 4 Dead 2 Melee Weapons

the original left 4 deadOne of the big complaints about the original Left 4 Dead was the lack of melee weapons.  Its as if there were no hardware or sporting good store anywhere in the city.  What big city does not have a sporting goods store or a hardware store?  In an epic battle with zombies, people will be grabbing anything they can.  Some of the first items that come to mind are baseball bats, axes,,,, and anything else people can get their hands on.

Valve software is working to fix the melee weapon problem in Left 4 Dead 2.  This list is what that “fix” is going to include.

  • Baseball Bat
  • Cricket Bat
  • Crowbar
  • Electric Guitar
  • Fire Axe
  • Frying Pan
  • Katana
  • Machete
  • Tonfa (police baton)
  • Chainsaw
  • This list of added melee weapons should make a lot of players happy.  Post your comments in the Left 4 Dead 2 melee weapons thread of the forum.

I am finished with Left 4 Dead

This is a personal rant about my experiences playing L4D.  If you wish to post a comment or a reply, please do so in this thread of the Left 4 Dead Forum.

Ok, thats it, I think I’am just about done with Left 4 Dead. This past weekend provides some good examples of what l4d public play is like. Overall, I am disappointed with the poor sportsmanship, sore winners, sore losers, and disgusting conduct of other players.

Example 1: About 7:30pm – 7:45pm last night I get home, fire up l4d and quick join a match. Its the first map of blood harvest and I am put on the infected team as a boomer. One of the infected says – “dont mess this up boomer.” Ok, so I’am ready, the survivors are coming up the trail, I puke and hit 2 of the 4 survivors. Almost instantly there is a vote kick against me and I am booted from the game. Which I thought was a lot unfair. What is the freaking deal? I hit the survivors, why was I vote kicked?

Example 2: I quick join another game. This one is No Mercy and is just starting. All 4 of the enemy team finish alive, but with almost no health bonus. All 4 of our team finish, and with a good health bonus. This gives my team about 175 point lead.

Second map of no mercy – out of the 4 members on my team, I am the only one that finishes alive. The other team on the other hand, all 4 of them finish and the score is almost tied. My team still has the lead, but barely.

Third map of no mercy – my team goes first because we have like a 25 point lead. All 4 of us finish the map alive, we have an “ok” health bonus and rack up some points.

When its the other teams turn to play the third map of no mercy, 3 of the 4 players of the other team leave. But why? Its been a close game, the teams were balanced, nobody had a major lead, we were having a really good game,,, and they just leave.

I leave there, quick join and leave a few games rather quickly – mainly because I do not like taking the place of a rager who is getting killed by a smoker or hunter.

    New Counter Strike Forum

A new Counter Strike Forum has been added to the line up.  This only seemed like a logical addition since it is one of the most popular online games ever played.  That one forum section covers both the original CS, and Counter-Strike:Source.

Counter Strike was originally developed by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe and was a free add-on to original Half-Life. The first release was in 1999. Valve Software bought the rights to the game, and released it as a commercial product in November of 2000. Because CS was developed for Half-Life, it used a modified version of the Quake engine. Over time the graphics became dated and due to the engine, as limited real world physics.

Counter Strike:Source is the original CS remade with the Source engine, which was developed for Half-Life 2. This version was released in October 2004.

The Source game engine offers improved graphics and real world physics, as compared to the Quake engine. The newest version of the Source engine supports Dual Core processors and better graphics then the original Source engine.

Counter Strike revolves around 2 teams – the terrorist and the counter terrorist. In some maps the terrorist have to plant a bomb to win, in some maps the counter terrorist have to rescue hostages to win.

Both team have access to a wide assortment of weapons, such as an AK-47, M4, shotguns, H&K MP5, pistols, AWP sniper rifle.

Counter Strike has the honor of being one of the most popular online games ever played. Even though the first version was released in 1999, 10 years later it still has a loyal following.
